# Color Palettes and Relationships

Color prompts work best when they define **dominant colors**, **supporting colors**, **accent proportion**, **value range**, and **saturation**. `Muted navy and warm ivory with a restrained vermilion accent` is more controllable than `colorful`.

## Core dimensions

## Color contrast types

| Contrast | How it works | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hue contrast | Clearly different color families. | Red figure against green field. |
| Value contrast | Light versus dark. | White flower on charcoal. |
| Saturation contrast | Vivid versus muted. | Neon sign in gray rain. |
| Temperature contrast | Warm versus cool. | Amber window against blue dusk. |
| Complementary contrast | Opposing hues intensify each other. | Orange coat against blue wall. |
| Simultaneous contrast | Surrounding color alters perceived hue/value. | Neutral gray appears warm beside blue. |
| Quantity contrast | Small accent balances a broad subdued field. | Five percent yellow in mostly navy image. |
| Edge contrast | Sharp color boundary versus blended transition. | Crisp red disk over soft gradient. |

## Palette prompt patterns

```text
limited palette: approximately 70% warm ivory, 20% deep navy, and 10% vermilion accents;
medium-high value contrast, otherwise muted chroma, no additional bright colors
```

```text
analogous forest palette of moss, sage, eucalyptus, and deep teal, cool gray mist,
one small amber lantern as the only warm accent
```

```text
high-key pastel palette of blush, butter yellow, powder blue, and off-white,
soft warm-gray shadows, low saturation, no pure black
```

When exact brand or interface colors matter, provide hexadecimal, RGB, CMYK, Pantone, or named swatches **and** plain-language descriptions. Generative models may not reproduce exact values, so verify and correct color in a deterministic design tool.
