# Lighting Terms

Build lighting descriptions from a few independent properties rather than a pile of mood words:

```text
[source] + [direction] + [quality] + [color] + [contrast/exposure]
```

Example: `large north-facing window at camera-left, soft cool side light, warm practical lamps in the background, gentle contrast`.

## Light roles

| Term | Function | Prompt cue |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Key light | Primary source defining shape and exposure. | `soft key light from camera-left` |
| Fill light | Reduces key-side shadow contrast without creating a second dominant direction. | `subtle neutral fill` |
| Negative fill | Dark surface absorbs bounce, deepening one side of the subject. | `negative fill on camera-right` |
| Backlight | Source behind the subject aimed toward camera; creates separation and translucency. | `strong window backlight` |
| Rim light | Narrow edge highlight, usually from behind and to one side. | `cool rim light around shoulders` |
| Kicker | Accent from rear-side that catches cheek, jaw, or product edge. | `hard rear kicker` |
| Hair light | Controlled top/rear light separating hair from background. | `soft hair light` |
| Background light | Illuminates backdrop independently from subject. | `graduated light on background` |
| Practical light | Visible working source in the scene, such as a lamp, candle, or sign. | `warm practical table lamps` |
| Motivated light | Designed light that appears to originate from a plausible visible or implied source. | `moon-motivated window light` |
| Ambient light | General nondirectional illumination already present in the environment. | `dim blue ambient light` |
| Bounce light | Light reflected from wall, ceiling, card, ground, or nearby object. | `soft white ceiling bounce` |
| Spill | Uncontrolled light reaching an unintended area; can feel natural or messy. | `colored neon spill on wet pavement` |

## Direction and placement

| Term | Visual result | Best used for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Front light | Minimizes facial shadows and texture; clear but relatively flat. | Beauty, catalog, documentation. |
| Side light | Reveals volume and surface texture through lateral shadow. | Portraits, food, materials. |
| Three-quarter light | Key arrives about 45 degrees to one side and above; dimensional and versatile. | General portraiture and products. |
| Backlight | Produces edge glow, silhouettes, flare, and translucent detail. | Atmosphere, hair, glass, leaves. |
| Top light | Creates shadows beneath brow, nose, and objects; theatrical or noon-like. | Drama, tabletop scenes. |
| Underlighting | Light rises from below; uncanny, stage-like, or campfire-motivated. | Horror, fantasy, performance. |
| Cross-lighting | Strong sources from opposing sides model edges and action. | Sports, stage, cinematic scenes. |
| Grazing light / raking light | Light skims nearly parallel to a surface, emphasizing relief and defects. | Stone, textiles, embossed detail. |
| Broad lighting | Portrait key illuminates the side of the face nearest camera. | Wider facial appearance, open mood. |
| Short lighting | Key illuminates the side turned away from camera. | Sculpted, slimming portrait effect. |
| Butterfly / Paramount | Frontal elevated key creates a small butterfly shadow under nose. | Glamour and symmetrical beauty. |
| Loop lighting | Slightly off-axis elevated key makes a small nose-shadow loop. | Natural classic portraits. |
| Rembrandt lighting | Cheek shadow leaves a small triangle of light beneath the far eye. | Painterly, dramatic portraiture. |
| Split lighting | One half of face lit, the other substantially shadowed. | Graphic tension and duality. |

## Quality and shadow character

| Term | Meaning | Prompt cue |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Soft light | Large apparent source creates gradual shadow edges and smooth transitions. | `large diffused softbox` |
| Hard light | Small apparent source creates crisp shadows and pronounced texture. | `hard bare-bulb light` |
| Diffused light | Light passes through cloud, silk, scrim, frosted glass, or diffuser. | `diffused skylight` |
| Specular light | Produces bright, defined reflections on glossy materials. | `controlled specular highlights` |
| Flat light | Low directional modeling and minimal shadow separation. | `flat overcast illumination` |
| Sculpted light | Deliberate highlights and shadows strongly describe three-dimensional form. | `carefully sculpted portrait light` |
| Dappled light | Broken spots of light through foliage, lattice, blinds, or patterned obstruction. | `dappled sunlight through leaves` |
| Patterned light / gobo | Projected shape or texture, such as window-blind stripes. | `venetian-blind gobo pattern` |
| Feathered light | Subject sits at a modifier's edge rather than brightest center for an even, subtle falloff. | `feathered softbox across face` |
| Wraparound light | Broad soft source reaches around curved forms, reducing abrupt terminator lines. | `wraparound window light` |
| Crisp shadows | Sharply defined boundaries indicating a small or distant source. | `crisp midday shadows` |
| Open shadows | Shadows retain readable detail rather than clipping to black. | `open luminous shadows` |
| Deep shadows | Dark tonal regions with limited detail and strong contrast. | `deep dramatic shadows` |

## Contrast and tonal range

| Term | Effect | Prompt cue |
| --- | --- | --- |
| High-key | Predominantly bright values, restrained shadows, airy appearance. | `high-key white studio lighting` |
| Low-key | Predominantly dark values with selective highlights. | `low-key cinematic lighting` |
| High contrast | Large difference between highlights and shadows. | `hard high-contrast chiaroscuro` |
| Low contrast | Narrow tonal range and gentle transitions. | `soft low-contrast light` |
| Chiaroscuro | Dramatic modeling through strong light-dark opposition. | `baroque chiaroscuro portrait` |
| Silhouette | Subject rendered mostly dark against a brighter field. | `clean sunset silhouette` |
| Semi-silhouette | Dark subject retains selective edge or shadow detail. | `backlit semi-silhouette` |
| Clipped highlights | Bright areas lose detail; may suggest harsh digital or dreamlike exposure. | Usually avoid unless intentional. |
| Crushed blacks | Dark regions lose detail; graphic but potentially muddy. | `inky crushed blacks` when intentional. |
| HDR-like range | Strong detail maintained in both bright and dark zones. | `natural high dynamic range` |
| Luminous midtones | Emphasis on smoothly separated central values. | `rich luminous midtones` |

## Natural light and time of day

| Term | Character | Useful detail |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dawn | Cool, dim pre-sunrise ambience with possible warm horizon. | Add mist, direction, and cloud cover. |
| Sunrise | Low warm direct light with long shadows and rapid color gradients. | State whether sun is visible or off-frame. |
| Golden hour | Warm low-angle sunlight shortly after sunrise or before sunset. | `warm backlit golden-hour haze` |
| Morning light | Usually clear, angled, and fresher/cooler than sunset. | Specify early or late morning. |
| Midday sun | High, hard source with short dense shadows and bright sky. | Useful for stark realism or graphic color. |
| Open shade | Soft skylight on a subject shielded from direct sun. | `cool open shade with warm background` |
| Overcast light | Large sky source, very soft shadows, muted contrast. | Great for color and texture accuracy. |
| Late-afternoon light | Lower, warmer, and more directional than noon. | Long side shadows and warm facades. |
| Sunset | Warm horizon source, saturated sky, silhouettes, and backlight. | Avoid relying on `sunset` alone; specify exposure. |
| Blue hour | Cool twilight after sunset or before sunrise, often balanced with city lights. | `deep cobalt blue-hour ambience` |
| Twilight | Low mixed illumination between day and night. | State warm or cool bias. |
| Moonlight | Conventionally cool directional night light; actual moonlight is reflected sunlight. | `soft silver moonlight through clouds` |
| Starlight | Extremely dim, broad night ambience. | Pair with long-exposure treatment if needed. |

## Artificial and visible sources

- **Tungsten lamp:** warm continuous source, often around 2700–3200 K; `warm tungsten practicals`.
- **Fluorescent light:** broad office/industrial source that may have green or cyan cast; `sickly green fluorescent overheads`.
- **LED panel:** controllable, clean source that can be soft or hard depending on modifier size.
- **Neon / LED signage:** saturated colored glow and localized spill; distinguish sign color from ambient color.
- **Candlelight:** very warm, low, flickering point sources with rapid falloff.
- **Firelight:** warm irregular under- or side-light with sparks and smoke.
- **Streetlight:** pools of top light; sodium-vapor suggests amber, mercury-vapor green-blue.

## Prompt patterns

```text
intimate restaurant portrait, warm candle practicals, soft key motivated by a pendant lamp,
cool blue window fill, gentle falloff, open shadows, no clipped highlights
```

```text
black ceramic bottle on slate, hard raking light from upper left, narrow rim lights,
controlled specular highlights, low-key black background
```

```text
foggy pine forest at dawn, diffuse cool skylight, low warm sun behind the trees,
subtle volumetric shafts, restrained bloom
```

Choose one dominant source and direction first. Add fill, accents, atmosphere, and color only when they clarify the intended image.
