Lighting Terms#

Build lighting descriptions from a few independent properties rather than a pile of mood words:

[source] + [direction] + [quality] + [color] + [contrast/exposure]

Example: large north-facing window at camera-left, soft cool side light, warm practical lamps in the background, gentle contrast.

Light roles#

Direction and placement#

Side light Reveals volume and surface texture through lateral shadow. Portraits, food, materials.
Three-quarter light Key arrives about 45 degrees to one side and above; dimensional and versatile. General portraiture and products.
Backlight Produces edge glow, silhouettes, flare, and translucent detail. Atmosphere, hair, glass, leaves.
Top light Creates shadows beneath brow, nose, and objects; theatrical or noon-like. Drama, tabletop scenes.
Underlighting Light rises from below; uncanny, stage-like, or campfire-motivated. Horror, fantasy, performance.
Cross-lighting Strong sources from opposing sides model edges and action. Sports, stage, cinematic scenes.
Grazing light / raking light Light skims nearly parallel to a surface, emphasizing relief and defects. Stone, textiles, embossed detail.
Broad lighting Portrait key illuminates the side of the face nearest camera. Wider facial appearance, open mood.
Short lighting Key illuminates the side turned away from camera. Sculpted, slimming portrait effect.
Butterfly / Paramount Frontal elevated key creates a small butterfly shadow under nose. Glamour and symmetrical beauty.
Loop lighting Slightly off-axis elevated key makes a small nose-shadow loop. Natural classic portraits.
Rembrandt lighting Cheek shadow leaves a small triangle of light beneath the far eye. Painterly, dramatic portraiture.
Split lighting One half of face lit, the other substantially shadowed. Graphic tension and duality.

Quality and shadow character#

Contrast and tonal range#

Natural light and time of day#

Term Character Useful detail
Dawn Cool, dim pre-sunrise ambience with possible warm horizon. Add mist, direction, and cloud cover.
Sunrise Low warm direct light with long shadows and rapid color gradients. State whether sun is visible or off-frame.
Golden hour Warm low-angle sunlight shortly after sunrise or before sunset. warm backlit golden-hour haze
Morning light Usually clear, angled, and fresher/cooler than sunset. Specify early or late morning.
Midday sun High, hard source with short dense shadows and bright sky. Useful for stark realism or graphic color.

Overcast light Large sky source, very soft shadows, muted contrast. Great for color and texture accuracy.
Late-afternoon light Lower, warmer, and more directional than noon. Long side shadows and warm facades.

Artificial and visible sources#

  • Tungsten lamp: warm continuous source, often around 2700–3200 K; warm tungsten practicals.
  • Fluorescent light: broad office/industrial source that may have green or cyan cast; sickly green fluorescent overheads.
  • LED panel: controllable, clean source that can be soft or hard depending on modifier size.
  • Neon / LED signage: saturated colored glow and localized spill; distinguish sign color from ambient color.
  • Candlelight: very warm, low, flickering point sources with rapid falloff.
  • Firelight: warm irregular under- or side-light with sparks and smoke.
  • Streetlight: pools of top light; sodium-vapor suggests amber, mercury-vapor green-blue.
  • Headlights: paired low hard beams, haze shafts, and strong frontal glare.
  • Projection light: image or color pattern cast across a subject.
  • Screen light: soft cool frontal glow from a phone, monitor, television, or control panel.
  • Laser light: narrow coherent beams visible mainly in haze; use as accents rather than general fill.
  • Bioluminescence: emitted cyan, green, violet, or fantasy-colored glow from organisms or materials.

Color and white-balance vocabulary#

Atmospheric light behavior#

  • Volumetric light: visible beams caused by scattering in fog, dust, smoke, or haze.
  • God rays / crepuscular rays: separated sunbeams passing through gaps in clouds or foliage.
  • Light shaft: localized directional beam, often from a window or opening.
  • Bloom: bright regions softly bleed into neighbors; keep subtle for realism.
  • Halation: reddish or warm glow around strong highlights, associated with film response.
  • Lens flare: internal lens reflections or veiling glare caused by bright sources near the frame.
  • Veiling glare: washed, low-contrast haze across the image from stray light.
  • Caustics: focused patterns made by reflection or refraction through water, glass, or polished metal.
  • Subsurface glow: light penetrates and scatters through skin, wax, leaves, or thin stone.

Common studio setups#
